The Facts That Decide It

Read the canyon line and the price line together, because at the same headline price two listings can buy different canyons.

Note the shape of the day behind every row: Las Vegas is about 272 miles from Page, so the tours budget 4.5-5 hours on the road each way. Either canyon means a 13-16 hour day for roughly 1-1.5 hours inside the slot.

The One-Sentence Answer

If you want the canyon in the famous photographs, with the shaft of overhead sun and a walk that never demands a ladder, Upper is worth the extra money, and the Las Vegas day that books it costs $259. If you want the cheaper slot canyon and can climb five flights of stairs down and the ladders back up, Lower delivers a longer guided walk for $80.50 booked locally. Both are guided-only, and both close when flash floods threaten.

What the Visit Is Actually Like

The sightseeing tour runs 1 hour 45 minutes in total, and that figure includes the ride to the canyon entrance, because private cars cannot drive the roughly 7 miles of Navajo road to the slot. About 30-40 minutes of the tour is inside the canyon itself. The walk covers about three-quarters of a mile with stairs and soft sand and about 200 ft of elevation change, and most of that is a gentle drift downward one way and back upward the other. There are no ladders.

Entry is a walk-in corridor, which is why Upper suits visitors who cannot or will not climb. One operator warns that skirts and dresses are not allowed inside, and all of them restrict you to hand-held photography with clear bags only. The $92 adult price is the canyon walk alone, before the $15 Navajo Nation Tribal Park fee, which is charged per person, per location, per day.

The Operators Who Run It

Upper has several Navajo operators, each with its own check-in and its own vehicles for the road to the canyon. Antelope Canyon Tours charges $92 adult plus the $15 Navajo fee. Antelope Slot Canyon Tours by Chief Tsosie runs a scenic tour at $95 adult (12+), $90 child (6-11) and $85 military, about 90 minutes in total over about 1 mile round trip with about 150 ft of climb, leaving from 148 6th Avenue in Page in enclosed 4x4 vans.

Adventurous Antelope Canyon Tours charges $120 adult and child (8-12), takes no children under 8, runs about 80 minutes inside and uses an open-air truck over a bumpy track, with check-in at Highway 98 milepost 302 and an exit counted as 21 steps up and 112 steps down. Where the Light Beams Come In

The light beams are an Upper Antelope Canyon effect: direct overhead sun reaching through the narrow slot onto the sandy floor. They need the sun high in the sky, which means the midday slots and the summer months. A visit in the late afternoon or in winter will not show them, and no operator publishes an exact calendar of when they appear.

Book a midday slot in summer if the beam is the reason you are going, and remember the canyon clock runs one hour ahead of Las Vegas all year because the Navajo Nation observes daylight saving while Las Vegas does not.

What the Visit Is Actually Like

The general tour at Ken's Tours runs 50-60 minutes with up to 15 people per group and costs $80.50. The floor is mostly flat once you are down, but getting down is the work: the tour lists say you must climb moderately steep ladders and stairs with minimal help. Dixie Ellis's Lower Antelope Canyon Tours charges the same $80.50 all-inclusive for ages 4 and up, runs 60-90 minutes over about 1.1 miles round trip and counts five flights of stairs down into the canyon, with check-in on Indian Route 222 off Highway 98.

The reason every visit is guided-only goes back to 12 August 1997, when a flash flood killed 11 hikers in Lower Antelope Canyon. The canyon closed and reopened with guided access and fixed metal stairways. That history is also why the canyons close without notice during monsoon storms from about mid-June through September, most active July to September.

Who It Suits and Who It Does Not

Lower rewards visitors who want a longer time in a slot canyon for less money, and who are comfortable on ladders with hands free. It is less kind to small children carried on a hip, to anyone with knee or shoulder trouble and to nervous climbers, because some ladder sections are steep enough that you face the rungs. Families with children 4 and up are accepted by Dixie Ellis's, while some Upper operators draw the line at 8.

Which Tour Goes to Which Canyon

This table lists the Las Vegas tours that state which canyon they enter, with the exact price each listing gives. Some listings decide the canyon for you, some sell it as an upgrade and one lets you choose at booking. Check the canyon column before you compare dollars, and remember that tips for the driver and Navajo guide are extra on most listings even when lunch is included.

The $160 Problem

The same $160 buys two different canyons. Jupiter Legend's $160 includes Lower Antelope Canyon. National Park Express's $160 includes Antelope Canyon X, with Upper or Lower Antelope available only as paid upgrades, and the Navajo permit not included on the Secret Antelope Canyon option. Empire Vacations, at $209, decides between Lower, Upper and Canyon X on the day based on weather and crowds, so you cannot book a specific canyon at all. If Upper is what you want, the only standard coach day that guarantees it is the $259 listing.

Light Beams

Upper, without competition. The beams are an Upper Antelope effect, produced by direct overhead sun entering the narrow slot, and they need the midday slots and the summer months. A late-afternoon visit or a winter visit to Upper will not show them either, so the canyon choice and the time of day have to be right together.

No operator publishes an exact calendar, and monsoon storms from about mid-June through September can cancel even midday tours when storms upstream threaten the canyon.

Families and Visitors Who Avoid Ladders

Upper. The walk-in corridor has no ladders, about three-quarters of a mile of walking and about 200 ft of elevation change, which is as close as a slot canyon gets to a stroll. Lower demands moderately steep ladders and stairs with minimal help, including five flights of stairs down at one operator.

Age rules cut both ways: Adventurous Antelope Canyon Tours takes no children under 8 at Upper, while Dixie Ellis's at Lower admits ages 4 and up with ages 0-3 free. Check the operator, not just the canyon.

Photography

Upper for the classic shot, both canyons for the phone gallery. The famous beam photograph can only be made in Upper, and only around midday in summer. On all standard tours at both canyons, photography is hand-held only: tripods, monopods and selfie sticks are banned, bags stay on the bus, and Upper allows only clear bags.

Crowds

Lower is capped at 15 people per group, which is a tighter group than the coach-based days deliver at the canyon mouth. Upper's group size is set by each operator rather than published as one cap, and its walk is a single corridor, so the famous midday summer slots are the busiest minutes in either canyon. The honest workaround for crowds is the calendar, not the canyon: the tribal park closes on Thanksgiving Day, the day after, Christmas Day and New Year's Day, and flash-flood cancellations thin the queues the hard way.

When a canyon closes on the day, the Las Vegas tours still run to Horseshoe Bend, a 1.5-mile shadeless walk, and refund the canyon portion under each operator's terms.

How It Compares

Antelope Canyon X is a separate slot canyon run only by Taadidiin Tours, and its hiking tour runs 1.5 hours at $47 adult and $37 age 0-17, the cheapest of the three. Entry is on stairs made of railroad ties, no ropes or ladders, so it sits between Upper and Lower on effort. The bag rule is the strictest: no bags of any kind, not even clear ones, and no tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, video or drones.

It is the base-price canyon on National Park Express's $160 day and one of the options Empire Vacations may assign on its $209 day.
